The only additional monitoring I have been able to find for DNS are the debugging settings and unfortunately I don't think that will work long term.

I am not sure that will work, but you can try and post your results. The information you are looking for will be found if you enable degub logging. The information is written to a text file. It does place overhead on the server. It captures source IP. As you indicated, it is not a nice, complete solution. If you used debugging, you would have to have another process that picks up the text file daily and extracts information and stores it in a db or something to that effect.
